A Note From Our Principal,  Dr. Tamára McAllister

Dear Parents,

While February brings about thoughts of cupid, hearts, and flowers, it is also designated as “Love of Reading” month here at Douglas.  During the week of February15th through the 19th we will have many activities celebrating reading.  These activities will include guest readers and virtual activities for the students to enjoy.  Please take some time this month to sit down with your child and read a story together, share with them why you enjoy reading, and encourage them to enrich their lives by reading as much as they possibly can.  In fact, we have designated February 19th as the day to read a story together as a family.  Please send us a picture of your family enjoying a story together so that we may post it on our Facebook page!

In addition to Love of Reading activities we have other scheduled events during the month of February and we hope to see you at any one or all of them.
February  3rd  – Title I Spring Review Meeting, at 2:15 via Zoom.  Prior to the PTO meeting we will be sharing Title One  Parent Survey data and asking parents for feedback in preparation for the 2021-2022 school year.  We would love to have you there!  PTO meeting immediately to follow. Check our Facebook page for the link.
February  4th -  Thursday Half Day- Late Start Day. Teachers will be working on progress reports February 4th.  There will be no AM session that day.  School will start at 11:40.  PM students will attend PM session.  AM students will complete work  during the PM session.  Mid-term progress reports will be available in PowerSchool on Friday, February 5th.

February 13th- Grade levels will plan age appropriate Valentine’s Day celebrations.  Due to COVID-19 mitigation procedures, we have made the school-wide decision that students will not have the opportunity to exchange Valentine’s cards this year but rest assured your child will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities.  Your child’s teacher will let you know how the day will be celebrated in their Remote classroom, so please wait to hear from him/her regarding details.
February 15th- In recognition of increasing COVID-19 cases our district has extended our currently implemented Remote  Learning model to February 12th.  We plan to return to Hybrid Learning, Monday February 15th.

February 22nd & 23rd Spring Pictures!  We will publish a schedule so that you know which day your student/s will have their picture taken. Students who are off campus for Remote Learning will have a scheduled time to come in to have their picture  taken.  Please make every effort to make sure your child is here for their scheduled picture time, as these pictures will be used for our yearbook.  Yes, we will have a yearbook this year!  Check this newsletter for more details regarding pricing and  ordering.

February 25th – 28th - Rodeo Break, no school.  Yee-haw!

March 1st - KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION! If you have a kindergartener for the 2021-2022 school year at home, it is time to start the registration process! We will begin registration for kindergarteners March 1st with a virtual kickoff “Round Up” event.  We will be holding virtual sessions for parents of future kindergarteners.  Parents can chose which session they would like to attend; Monday, March 1st at 10:45 AM or 5:30 PM and Tuesday March 2nd at 7:00 AM.  Parents will be able to meet the principal and kindergarten teachers, take a virtual tour of our kindergarten classrooms, hear about our Project Ready kindergarten summer program and ask any questions they may have. Spanish translation will be provided.  Find the Zoom link on pg. 3 in this newsletter. We will also post the link on our Facebook page at the end of February.  At a later date our future kindergartens will also be invited to drive by and meet the kindergarten teaching team, as well as to receive a free book and some summer fun activities (an invite will be sent out to registered kindergarten students).  If for some reason you cannot make it to one of our sessions you can come in from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. anytime the week of March 1st.  It is crucial we get future kindergarten students registered early so we can start making decisions about the number of teachers we will need for next year. Stop by and get your kindergartener on the list!    We at Douglas love having your child as part of the Bulldog Team!  Thank you for all that you do in support of your child’s  education.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tamára McAllister Principal
